The inaugural ‘Roots’ lecture – as part of L’Afrique 2010

The L’Afrique festival is proud to present the first ever ‘Roots’ lecture. Named after the seminal book by Alex Haley which explored the African origins of Black Americans these lectures will invite prominent speakers to comment on the experiences of Black people in UK and will promote debate on questions surrounding identity, immigration and belonging in contemporary Britain.

Veteran campaigner and broadcaster Darcus Howe is our first guest. He will give his views on the importance of ‘Roots’ to Black people in Britain in the seventies when it was published and adapated for TV as a ground-breaking miniseries. The lecture will be preceded by a screening of an episode of the series ‘Roots’ that brought Haley’s work to a wider audience.

Manoute Seri, who founded the Festival in 2003 said:

‘I’m proud that 7 years on L’Afrique is still innovating by bringing world class African performers to the North East of England, encouraging discussion of important issues and showing how much African and Black culture can offer the North East. We hope that once again we will bring communities together to listen to music, dance, talk, reflect and most important of all – to have a good time!’
